Climate
Summers are hot and humid in Varanasi. Day temperatures can rise up to 45° C. Winter is comfortable with average temperatures of around 25° C, though the nights tend to be much cooler at around 7°C. The monsoons arrive at Varanasi in the months of June / July and it rains through till the end of September & early October.

Varanasi
Varanasi is one of the ancient seats of learning in India and is situated at a bend in the sacred Ganges River. Home to some of the most ancient and revered monasteries in the world, Varanasi is the place where scholars still come to learn the ancient knowledge of the Vedas and debate on the nature of God. For over 2,000 years it has been the religious capital of India, more revered and sacred than all the other places of pilgrimage put together.

Chowki Ghat
This ghat is famous for the huge pipal (Ficus religiosa) tree at the top of the Steps which shelters a great array of stone figures of snakes, nagas. Havell (1905: 118-119) described this Ghat: "under a fine old pipal-tree, there is a small shrine and a great number of old carved stones, some of the Snakes, twined together like Mercury's caduceus, with some fine figure sculptures let into the upright face of the platform which surrounds the tree are probably relics of the early Buddhist period". Closeby to this tree is the shrine of Rukmangesvara, and at some distance lies Naga Kupa ("Snake Well"). On the occasion of the festival honoring the snake, Naga Panchami, falling on the 5th light half of Sravana (July –August), these shrines are especially worshipped.
